Many times here on the pages of Edge Magazine we have had the pleasure of bringing you some of the finest Euros on the planet. In an effort to stay on the cutting “edge” of the scene, we often bring you manufacturers’ demo cars that are edgy and showcase their latest innovations. Ivan Tampi would be one of those people. Having started Ground Designs 2000 in 1999, Ivan is the originator of the Street Fyghter and Black Widow body kits that are so prevalent these days. Ivan built this car to showcase his new Black Widow kit that is also available for a Mazda RSX, but this ’98 Honda CRX makes for one mean-looking ride.
Ivan is a spare no expense kinda guy and that’s evident by the quality of the parts used. From the Vortech supercharger to the Japanese-spec sport air ride suspension system and the Italian steering wheel, every piece is top notch. The car took two years to build as Ivan was so busy running the business that he had little spare time to work on the car and Ivan’s creative mind came up with things like working Audi TT vents into the dash. “Things like these wind up being much harder to make work than one would think,” laments Ivan of the mods, which, like the fiberglassed dash, took a fair amount of time but look badass when complete.
The mantra of Ground Designs 2000 is that it must be quality and this car is a perfect example of Ivan’s attention to detail and it has paid of in many Best Of Shows since he’s started hittin’ the show circuit. Don’t get it twisted thinking that this car is all show and no go as Ivan made sure that the CRX could handle itself should a brief stoplight confrontation come up. With a Vortech supercharger attached to the Japanese spec B16A motor, 300+ HP is under foot to take down most opponents. The suspension that Ivan purchased is not the run of the mill air ride suspension, as it’s the finest that Japan has to offer and has settings from race to luxury. Ivan might be carrying them soon, but get your “cheddar” saved because this setup ain’t cheap. “Black Widow Special Edition” bangs on so many levels that’s it’s one of those cars that you have see to believe.
