In today’s Resto Section, we hung out with Lee from Powder Coating Specialties of Commerce, CA., and got to talking about some of the advantages of powder coating. What is powder coating? It is a dry powder utilized in paint jobs and it offers one huge upside in comparison to traditional liquid paint. Unlike conventional liquids, powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a suspended form. Instead, the powder coating is typically applied with current electricity, which will magnetize the powder as it is being applied, allowing it to attach itself to the surface. It then cures under heat to form a skin that turns into a hard finish which is much tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating is mainly used for the coating of metals, automobile and bicycle parts.
