We do our fair share of shop visits and tours but this one was definitely a treat. During a prearranged visit to ididit, we made sure to schedule our visit to coincide with their open house/car show—and man were we in for a treat.
As it is, ididit has become a household name for those into classic restorations. Their name is a peculiar one, which came about as a result of everyone asking who had built the columns he had crafted. When asked, he would always respond with “I did it” and that’s how the namesake came to be.
Fast-forward to present day and ididit has become synonymous with creating the perfect steering column and related accessories. From fit to finish, the side business that was started in 1986 has blossomed into a leading manufacturer of universal and retrofit steering columns and accessories. Founded and owned by an avid hot rod enthusiast, ididit designs produces steering columns and components that provide the perfect balance of style and functionality—a must for all custom classic cars.
Furthermore, ididit offers a full line of steering column accessories, including mount kits, brackets, shift indicators, push button/keyless ignition, turn signal kits, cruise-control kits, steering shafts, and U-joints to complete the whole custom steering system package. Each of their products has been meticulously designed to address fit, function, and fashion, and tons of research goes into each of their elegantly crafted parts.
So what does this mean to you? This means that when you buy an ididit retrofit column you are getting a perfectly engineered aftermarket column that will fit in the original steering column location, and in most cases, will put the steering wheel back in its original location. But is it a stock replacement? No it’s better. Ididit columns are designed with the vehicle in their shop to ensure the perfect fit and flawless installation. In short, they’ve done the work so you won’t have to! So save yourself time, money, and the hassle!
The drive to their shop was nothing short of breathtaking. Whereas Los Angeles is a concrete jungle, the ididit facility in Tecumseh, Michigan, sits amidst a landscape of open greenery. Upon our arrival, a towering neon “ididit” sign and a ’50s diner-style building greeted us, and as we made our way into the shop, the ididit crew introduced themselves and our tour began. Aisle after aisle we were surrounded by steering columns and accessories; it was like a candy store for grown folks.
Just when we thought we had seen it all, we stepped outside and wrapped around the building and down the block were tons of cars on display. In all, it was a great tour and an equally impressive car show that showcased not only ididit’s work but their loyal following and passion for custom car culture. So steer your way onto their site and find what fits your build.
