The staff of Motorsport Showcase and presenting sponsor Budweiser did it again in producing one of Lowriding’s most revered events, The 2013 Mesa Arizona Super Show and Lowrider Magazine Arizona Tour Stop! On April 27th, the hot day led into a sizzling evening of classics, customs, and a climax of of the Lowrider culture at its best!
The Motorsport Showcase signature Saturday day and night Super Show opened its doors with over 700 entries and a car hop competition that literally had cars pointing to the stars in fierce competition with titles going to Arizona’s Franks Custom Hydraulics, California’s Max Moreno and Chiao of Goodtimes, and Cali Chris of Black Magic from Las Vegas Nevada in their claim for dominance.
The indoor Convention Center was wall-to-wall Lowrider royalty with this Year’s Lowrider Hall of Legend Individual Display featuring the world famous Twilight Zone 62 Impala of Lifestyle built and owned by Master Builder Mike Lopez. Mikes projects alone, could have filled the convention center. Throughout his career, he has built dozens of titleholders and contenders with preciseness and dedication matched by no other. As a lifetime member for Lifestyle, he flies the plaque tattoo on his arm, but carries it in his heart.
This year’s Lowrider Hall of Legends Club Display featured one of Lowridings most prominent and well-known clubs, Klique. The kliquers came to impress with a few new projects and their already proven winning line-up. Each chapter brought in their best such as John Sanchez’s Beautiful candy red Lincoln from El Paso. The club took a fair share of Best of Show Awards in Mesa as well, such as 3rd place Traditional winner Saul Vasquez with his blue 59 convertible, 3rd Place Truck sweepstakes winner Ruben Arreguin with his outstanding 59 El Camino, and David Romero’s Best of Show original 1958 Impala. The other Best of Show Originals were awarded to Tino Hernandez of the Intruders with his immaculate 69 Impala and Pele of Otra Vida Car Club of Phoenix with his rare 61 Impala.
The Best of the Best came to Mesa again with Albert De Alba’s El Rey 63 Impala reclaiming his Best of Show Car Title. Best of Show Car 2nd place was awarded to George Victoria with his vibrant Gold 65 Impala which also was awarded the Lowrider Excellence Award, and a well known favorite Jr. Garcia’s 64 Impala of Imperials CC. LA Chapter. Fellow Imperials LA President Thomas Vasquez was awarded 1st Place Traditional Best of Show and Able Zavala took home the 2nd Place Traditional with his beautifully done 64 Impala representing The Imperials. The 2012 Truck of the Year Radical Yukon owned by Hector Esquivel made the trip to Arizona to qualify again along with Bobby Enz and his 50 Chevy Truck from Uniques claiming 2nd Place Best of Show Truck. Nano Nevarez of New Breed C.C. received the Special Recognition Plaque awarded by the Motorsport Showcase / Lowrider Magazine Judging staff. Louie Villa Jr. impressed everyone with his fully customized Harley taking Best Motorcycle of Show and the Best of Bike winners were as follows: Best of Show Trikes, 3rd place Adrian Lopez, 2nd place David Cervantes of Goodtimes, and 1st place Best of Show Trike honors went to Dagoberto Duran of Legions Bike Club. Best of Show Bikes, 3rd place, Kevin Vierra, 2nd Place, Cierra Careaga of Groupe, and 1st Place honors went to Freddie Cabrera. A new best of Show Peddle Car/Special Interest Sweepstakes went to Sharlene Duarte representing Goodtimes. The uniqueness of the Mesa floor plan stood out due to the different surroundings throughout. Spirit Car Club of Phoenix was awarded Best Club Display and Special Props to Spirit CC in attending every Mesa Super Show since 1983. The club has always maintained a good relationship with Host Club Society Car Club. The Plaza area showcased Groupe Car Club and its rows of entries also taking most members of show. Groupe came in with chapter representatives from throughout their vast network making the Mesa Show a mandatory event. AZ. Chapter Walter and company did a great job in hosting their membership complete with a mobile carne asada BBQ at move-in. the Plaza also showcased the 2012 Bomb of the Year, owned and built by Gene Bare of Rollerz Only. Gene only had to travel across the valley to qualify for the 2013 Crown in Vegas this October. Gene was also recognized in receiving the Society Car Club Steve Schmitz Memorial Award given to an Arizona based car. The 2nd Place Best Bomb went to Bernard Casian’s 1950 Chevy of Uniques Car Club with Tino Herrera’s Pan Dulce Bomb from Style Unlimited Car Club coming in at 3rd Place Best Bomb of Show. The grass and mature trees also gave a park setting for the love to lay beauties nestled on the Convention Center lawn and trees provided just the right amount of shade from the Arizona sun during the day. This year, the Mesa Super Show expanded with a new Bike Plaza arena next to the main entrance. The Bike Plaza showcased top contender bikes, trikes, and Special interest Peddle cars representing seven states. The vast amount of other clubs who displayed their plaques and colors proudly were a VIP list of Lowriding like Oldies, Stylistics, Majestics, Techniques, Dukes, Old Memories, The Crowd, La Gente, USO, Brown Society, New Class, Redeemed, Good Life, Phoeniquera Classics, Identity, Old School, Phoenix Prime, Sofisticated Few, Phoenix, Intimidations, New Image, Intruders, Lowrider Style, Majesty, Mi Vida, Miranda’s Customs, Phoenix Riderz, Silent Breeze, Seductive, Solitos, Swift, Tiempo, Timeless Bombs, United, Xcelencia, C U Lukin, No Limit, Nokturnal, On the Scene, Streets, and many more clubs and independents.
This Super Show would not be complete without our Lowrider music playing the soundtrack of our lives. James Rivas, aka The Manic Hispanic and Angie Gomez of Mega Radio hosted this year’s concert. The Mesa Amphitheatre was filled to capacity blending new and old School together on one stage. Zig Zag formally of NB Ryderz, Proper Dos, and Phoenix’s own MC Magic set the tone with all our favorite hits, and headlining this year, “The Latin All Stars” with Richard Bean original singer of Suavicito, Steve Salas, lead singer of Tierra, Greg Esparza of Thee Midnighters, Ray Carrion formally of Azteca and El Chicano, and many others producing a super mix of our favorite Latin Hits from throughout the years! Rocky Padilla also joined the Latin All Stars singing his Lowrider hits! Mega Radio personality and Superior Arizona native Angie Gomez sang her latest singles and finished off with The Latin All Stars singing Sabor A Mi. Grammy nominated artists Rose Royce jammed to their SUPER hits like Car Wash, I Wanna Get Next To You, Love Don’t Live Here Anymore, Ooh Boy, I’m Going Down, Wishing On A Star and others! It was a night to remember down memory lane.
