As the 16th largest city in the U.S. and the largest city in the Blue Grass State, Louisville, Kentucky, is home to more than 90 attractions, 17,000 hotel rooms, 2,500 restaurants, the world famous Kentucky Derby horse race and, last but not least, the annual Southern Showdown car show.
This past year’s sixth annual Southern Showdown event was moved to the newly constructed Cardinal Stadium, located in the heart of Louisville. The facility is where the University of Louisville Cardinals play football. As always, the guys and gals of Cool Cars put on a great show. Saturday started out with dark gray skies and scattered rain; however, that didn’t hold back the troops from rolling in. By midday, the skies were partly cloudy and the sun was peeking through. Rides from all around the Midwest and Southern states made the journey to the show.
The day’s events started out with the hydraulics competition, where all of the top competitors from the surrounding area showed up to get a piece of the cash that Cool Cars was paying out. Donny Abbott took the Truck Hop with his ’85 Chevy S-10. The Single-Pump Hop winner was Matt Crabtree with his ’68 Chevy Impala, while Chris Ponder hit 60 inches to take Double-Pump with his Olds Cutlass. The Radical Hop was dominated by Jorge Texta with his ’87 Mazda. When it all was said and done, T&D Customs took both the Street and Radical Dance classes.
Once the hydraulics contest was wrapped up, it was time for the bikini contest. Many local beauties showed up to strut their stuff for the Ms. Southern Showdown crown. After the guys wiped up their drool and the tantalizing hotties left the stage, Icesis took the stage with a performance that kept everyone on their feet and hanging around.
Sponsors for Southern Showdown included Cool Cars, Nopi, Firestone, Dropem Wear, Scott Jr’s Interior Shop, Viair Compressors, Gangster Wire Wheels and Air Ride Technologies. Many of the sponsors had booths set up, along with many other vendors like Drop Jaw Magazine, Digital EFX Wraps, Parker and Ohio River Valley Photo. Thanks to everyone’s participation, the most recent Southern Showdown was a certified success. We’ll see you again at the ’06 show.
