Nicknames tell us a lot about the character of a person, and Jose “Grampz” Chavez is no different. Having been a Lowrider for years, his fellow Las Vegas Lowriders have come to expect this OG to have a variety of traditional Lowrider-style vehicles. His latest in that arena being a ’73 Chevy Impala and a 1987 Buick Regal.
Almost 15 years ago, Grampz was down at the local outdoor swap meet when a man approached him and asked him about his ’73 Impala. The man told Grampz about another guy who was selling a clean ’78 Chevy Monte Carlo with only eighty-two thousand miles on the odometer. Even better, the seller was the one and only owner of this car. Grampz was already on the lookout for a G-body style ride for his wife, Lori, so he went to take a look at the Monte to see if it was as nice as this man described. The Monte had recently been painted and was mechanically sound, but it wasn’t a G-Body from the 80’s.
After some talk with his wife, the couple agreed that Grampz would trade the ’87 Regal to her and build the ’78 Monte for himself. A deal was struck with the seller and soon, the Monte was on its way to its new home. His goal was to make this rare ’78 with T-tops the next head-turner out on the Vegas Strip. The interior needed some work, but Grampz decided to go all-out with this ride, doing a complete frame-off makeover. As time went on, Grampz made sure everything was perfect; from painting the frame and belly of the Monte to having all new rubbers and seals replaced with new ones. Just about everything that could still be bought in new or aftermarket condition for this ride was purchased and installed as a replacement. Although this Chevy has everything it takes to be an award-winning, show-worthy ride, Grampz says he’ll continue to keep it as a street cruiser. He plans on adding some engraving and a creative trunk setup to accentuate the hydraulics installed inside.
Grampz sends his thanks and appreciation to his wife, Lori, and the rest of his homies who helped out with the build-up of this incredible purple cruiser. He also sends a special thanks to his good friend, Jeremy Alsop, who really helped him through some tough times.
