Jagster Engineering Group is known for producing the majority of the car club plaques out there today, but company owner Joel Garcia is known for producing something of his own; top-notch Lowriders! His most well known creation was the 1963 Impala known as “Hustler ’63,” and today he follows that up with this 1957 Chevy Bel Air, fittingly nicknamed “Original Hustler.” Joel’s Lowrider pedigree runs deep. “My dad’s been Lowriding ever since he was young, and he taught us the culture,” Joel says proudly. “I remember cruising in his Lowriders when I was about seven years old.” His father is still active in the Lowrider scene and owns multiple Lowriders himself. “We are into every type of car,” Joel adds, “from new cars to old cars.”
This particular’57 was bought as a project car from Kebo, better known to many as Rapper/Filmmaker Ice Cube’s bodyguard. “I bought it all parted-up and it took about a year an half to put it all back together,” says Joel. One of the headaches that Joel ran into was getting hard-to-find parts. “Sometimes, things are so scarce you can’t even find them and when you do, then you have to pay top dollar for them,” he says.
Joel took this ’57 to Manuel Rojas, of Safe and Sound, in Downey, CA., who put the original 283-cubic-inch back together to original specs. Manuel also put together the drive train, rear, and transmission. “Nobody else but Manuel can do something like that,” praises Joel. Pedro, from Higher Level Auto Body, painted the car after putting it back together. Juanito, of Juanito’s Auto Upholstery, in Lynwood, CA., assembled the original interior while La Habra Plating handled all of the chrome on the car.
“Original Hustler” is basically a finished project; the only changes that will be made will be to swap out the engine with a 283 Dual Quad system? if Joel ever gets his hands on one. Joel would like to thank his family, his car club, John Kennedy at Bowtie, and Burt at the Chevy Shop.
