As a youngster growing up in Woonsocket, RI, Alex Negron would go to the local grocery store with his mother and become mesmerized by picking up the latest copy of Lowrider Magazine and pawing through its pages. Ever since those days in the local market, Alex became determined to own a Lowrider of his own someday. Alex’s story is amazing, considering the trials and tribulations he experienced in his four year build up of one of the nicest ’63 Impalas’ in the Northeast region of the United States.
Alex’s dream began four years ago, when this hungry builder purchased the ’63 for $7,500 and quickly began the work needed to restore the Impala to his childhood vision. While working on the car at a friend’s garage, disaster struck. The car came crashing off the lift, bringing down the Chevy’s heavy frame and Alex’s dream in the process! At first, Alex felt defeated as he looked over the badly mangled and twisted body of the car. After the encouragement and support of his family, he decided to fix the body of the car. Over time, the car took shape again as Alex had all of that tragic damage repaired. A spare frame was purchased, and the ’63’s suspension parts were all chrome-plated. The entire body was worked over by Aran at Alex’s house, and the car was shipped off to the body shop for paint. Disaster struck again as the auto body shop burned to the ground. Luckily for Alex, the damage was not bad enough to derail his dream, so he continued on and repaired the imperfections left behind by the shop fire.
After about 8 hours spent trying to line up the front fenders and hood, another setback occurred as the car accidentally went into drive and crashed into Alex’s above ground pool. By this point it was man versus machine as Alex began thinking that his car was out to get him. Undaunted, he pressed on. Fast-forward a few months and the burned-down body shop was open for business again and ready to paint Alex’s ’63 Impala. The car came back shining in an eye-popping Yellow paint with a White painted top. With the help of Alex’s cousin, Angel Luis Negron, the duo added finishing touches such as the awesome lace patterns on the roof and steering wheel. Over time, both of them put back the windows and trim on the car, and then Alex’s dream came to life. One of the final touches included a custom interior stitched by Candy’s auto upholstery of Providence, R.I. Alex purchased a custom aircraft setup from his friend Jaime of JG Customz of Pawtucket, RI. Jaime is known as one of the first riders in the Northeast to have a working aircraft setup installed in his car, so he was the perfect person to help Alex make his old school dreams of a Pesco setup come true.
Alex unveiled his $54,000 unique creation in March of 2010, at the Boston World of Wheels show and took home an award for best in class. His ’63 Impala has become a new standard for rides coming from such a difficult region of the United States to build a Lowrider in, considering the harsh cold winters that shorten the building and cruising seasons.
