Robert “Beto” Espinosa is a man looking for his respect. And we have to say that he has earned it with a number of memorable cars. You might remember Robert’s August 2003 cover car, “Don’t Cry Over Me,” a ’68 Chevy [cars name=”Impala”] convertible that’s quite the looker with its hideaway lights and just about every option that came on the Impala that year. The paint was something deep enough to go cliff diving into and the car plays second only to one of his greatest builds, “Pura Onda,” the original that helped rewrite the rule books.
This ’64 Impala SS represents but another of Beto’s “toys” and was actually built to be a clean daily driver. “Laid Out” was obtained in a trade for a [cars name=”Lincoln”] Mark VI with his friend Robert Grimes of Longmont, [cars name=”Colorado”]. Beto wound up putting his “Midas” touch on the car with the paint, interior and setup all receiving some TLC to get it to “Imperials material.” Front bumper guards, fender skirts and a tissue dispenser are just a few of the options that Beto added to complete his low-laying toy. ENGINE/DRIVETRAIN: [cars name=”Chevrolet”]’s 327-c.i.d. engine has a reputation of its own and stands as one of Chevy’s most popular engines, being offered in more than a million cars during this period. With that in mind, it’s no wonder that Robert just decided to have the motor rebuilt and add a few chrome accessories along with a dual exhaust to complete the otherwise stock drivetrain.
BODY/PAINT: The car was previously painted so the crew at Arapahoe Body and Paint in Boulder, Colorado, did some touch-up with the two-tone Twilight Blue and off-white on the top. Bugz Auto Art of Phoenix, Arizona, did some tasty pinstriping, while Ajax Plating in Denver, Colorado, and El Paso Plating in El Paso, Texas, helped get everything nice and shiny.
INTERIOR: The interior is of the original configurationwith a blue pattern with white inserts. The dash andsteering wheel have been color matched with thecar and an SS middle console added. Rex at S&SUpholstery in Longmont, Colorado, handled the work.
SOUND SYSTEM: Robert’s favorite music flows from a Panasonic head unit to a set of Rockford Fosgate Punch [cars name=”100″] amps forcing a set of Boston Acoustics speakers to spit out the mids and highs. Two Pyle woofers take it down low and work the bottom end quite nicely. Dave Martinez at Dave & Rob Customs in Longmont made it happen.SETUP: Two chrome pumps from Red’s Hydraulics were fitted with 8-inch cylinders all around, while 2-ton Red’s springs hold up the SS and four dumps, five switches and eight solenoids work together to get Laid Out to do just that. In addition to doing the installation, Sam Henry of Sam’s Custom Hydros in Denver also made it a point to reinforce the front half of the frame.
