The music started for Marco Cardenas AKA MC Magic at an early age. The disc jockey grew up in a low-income housing area in Avondale, Arizona, and got involved in the local scene. From break dancing to sponsoring teen dances at the Avondale Community Center, Magic always surrounded himself with music. He further made a name for himself by recording personalized songs at the local park.
In the early ’90s, Magic formed an independent record company called Nastyboy Records, releasing his debut CD Don’t Worry in 1995, which included the hit “Lost In Love.” The single did very well considering that local radio stations in the Phoenix area only gave it a few spins in the evening. Even so, audience response to the song was strong.
While working on new songs for his sophomore CD, Magic decided to change things up to include some of the rappers that he was collaborating with. This is how Nastyboy Klick came to be. NBK recorded two albums and gave us the smash single “Down For Yours,” featuring Roger Troutman of Zapp.
Nastyboy Klick performed for audiences all across the Southwest and beyond, and were recognized as one of the top up-and-coming hip-hop groups in the Southwest. Many feel that MC Magic’s smooth music is the main cause for a baby boom in Phoenix during the ’90s, but Magic wanted to try something new and different to grab the attention of the radio stations and the listeners. In 2001, Magic decided to fine-tune his music and rename the group NB Ridaz. As NBR, Magic produced hits like “Pretty Girl,” “So Fly,” “Runaway,” “Until I Die” and more.
MC Magic’s new solo album, Magic City, is likewise sure to be a essential CD to add to your collection, especially when that special lady is riding with you or you’re just chilling at the crib. The single “Sexy Lady,” featuring DJ Kane, the famous lead voice of the Kumbia Kings, is climbing the charts and already hitting as far as #1 in many cities.
Even though it took a few years, MC Magic is back with a strong collection. “I feel that Magic City will take me all the way,” says Magic. Hit up your local radio station and request some of the songs from Magic City or visit www.nastyboyrecords.com for more info.
