The other day two mysterious black cases were delivered to our office. When we saw them we were a little reluctant to open them for fear of having a SWAT Team knocking on our door. You couldn’t imagine how relieved we were when we found out that the cases were from our buddies over at Chevrolet Performance and inside were some brand new transmissions, a 4L65-E and a 4L85-E.
When building a high horsepower engine it is important to have the right transmission hooked up to get all that power from the engine to the wheels. Lucky for us, Chevrolet Performance has our backs in this department otherwise all of our projects are literally all show and no go.
An updated version of GM’s tried and true 4L60 transmission, the 4L65-E is a 4-speed automatic transmission. With a torque rating of 430lb-ft the 4L65-E features five-pinion gears, heat-treated stator shaft splines, an induction-hardened turbine, and seven-plate clutch. A popular transmission choice not just with us but with many of our sister titles as well the 4L65-E can be commonly found in applications such as the C6 Corvette, Pontiac GTO, Cadillac Escalade and Escalade EXT, Chevrolet Silverado SS, GMC Yukon Denali, and Hummer H2.
Another 4-speed automatic transmission, the 4L85-E is a beast by itself. Designed to handle even heavier-duty uses than its predecessor, the 4L80-E the 4L85-E carries a torque rating of 685lb-ft. Capable of handling transmission duties for vehicles with a gross vehicular weight of up to 18,000lbs, the 4L85-E can be found in applications such as the Chevy Avalanche, Chevy Suburban, and the GMC Yukon XL.
Check back soon to see what kind of engines these bad boys will be hooked up to and what kind of rides they’ll be dropped into.
