Lowrider Bike History :
Lowrider bikes are a fairly recent trend. No one knows for sure where the idea of lowrider bikes came from. Lowrider bikes primarily consist of frames similar to the Scwhinn sting-ray frames from the 1960s and 1970s and the addition of many other parts such as twisted handle bars, colored banana seats, dual mirrors, spoked chrome wheels, dice valve caps, painted murals, and/or speaker systems. Although no one knows for sure when and where Lowrider bikes came from, many believe that Lowrider bikes started with both the California car culture and the Mexican-American culture in the 1960s. Many believe that while grandfathers, fathers, and sons worked together to transform cars—mostly Chevrolets—into masterpieces decorated with velvet-upholstered dashboards, chromed rims and elaborate murals, kids were building and spicing up their bikes. Kids, mostly teenagers who were too young to drive cars or even afford cars, focused their attention on their bicycles. Using a 1960s Schwinn-styled frame, kids manipulated their bikes by bending the fork or cutting the frame in such a way that the pedals barely missed the sidewalk. Then, they added ape-hanger handlebars and other accessories. Remaining popular for many years, Lowrider bikes became the new obsession among many teen-age boys in the late 1990s. Kids from many parts of California spent hundreds and even thousands of dollars into creating their Lowrider masterpieces. Many created extraordinary Lowrider bikes that mimicked Lowrider cars.
