In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the 1993 exhibit at the Laguna Art Museum entitled Kustom Kulture: Von Dutch, Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, Robert Williams and Others, C.R. Stecyk III, Paul Frank and Greg Escalante presented the Kustom Kulture II at the Huntington Beach Art Center. The 1993 show proved to be a crucial installment for car culture and lowbrow art as it allowed many of the underground artists to display their artwork at legitimate museums.
Many of the artists featured had been producing the ’50s- and ’60s-inspired art for over twenty years, but it had never been available for the mainstream public to see. The Kustom Kulture I exhibit is credited for reviving the greaser/Rat rod era within the newer generation and inspiring them to pick up wrenches and paintbrushes.
We know that this event also had some type of influence in the lowrider artists of today, and we felt that it was only right for us to attend the anniversary event so we could bring this exhibit to you!
