We started off the show season this past January by visiting the 64th Annual Grand National Roadster Show of Pomona, CA; one of the longest and most prestigious car shows running to date. In the Hot Rod world, it is the place to show and be seen, and the show breeds competition in the sense that it helps set the trends and styles of auto customization as most competitors try to one up one another. If you ever need inspiration for your project, this is the show to attend as the best-of-the-best attend the 3-day event.
The 2013 GNRS attracted over 500 of the world’s most incredible Roadsters, Hot Rods, Rat Rods, Dragsters, Trucks, Motorcycles and our favorite, the Lowriders. This year there were seven full capacity exhibit buildings, and the surrounding grounds played host to the Grand National Roadster Show that roared into town. The show hosted the finest roadsters in the country; all trying their luck at taking home the coveted America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award.
Over the years, the Lowrider classes have grown, and this year’s show had even more clubs displayed throughout the fairgrounds. With great ambiance, the cars came in on Thursday at designated times to help stagger the roll-in times for the show. The bad weather and rain didn’t stop the Tovars of Hawaiian Gardens in debuting their latest creation; a ’39 Chevrolet Panel that was painted in an elegant candy apple red. Lifestyle C.C. was looking sharp as usual, by winning a Best Car Club Display, which featured a fresh ’69 Caprice owned by Danny Lugo. Also on display for the club was John Herrera’s Lime ’68 Caprice, The Oldies had a few cars on display that included the legendary “Tequilero;” a custom ’48 Chevrolet Fleetline. Jose and his May Centerfold ’50 Chevy from the Imperials got a lot of the Hot Rodders to take notice, and Showtime C.C. also represented the Lowrider community, as this year the Lowriders were limited because the show sold out early.
Like we said before, this show is great for ideas, as the Hot Rod builders will bring out cars that are under construction. With nothing to hide, the creative designs are all there for people to see; including custom frames, custom interiors, and the elaborate engine compartments that the Hot Rods are known for. The show also had plenty of crossover cars this year, from first and second generation Rivieras to the ever-popular classic Cadillacs, which could almost be considered Lowriders, just by changing ownership.
This year, there was a copper color ’62 Bubble top Bel-Air that had us coming back to it, as it featured a 2-inch chop top that was executed perfectly. After seeing this car in person, the wheels in my head kept spinning as I could picture a ’63 or ’64 Impala sporting that look. Just knowing that a ’61 Impala would also look great with a top like that almost had me buying another project to build!
This is definitely one of my favorite shows, as it has something for everybody, from the vendors to the beautiful cars that are on display. The three-day show feels like three different shows, as each day brings a different element or vibe to the event. This year, the Lowriders were spread out as the show was rumored to have been sold out since October, but they could still be found in several halls and throughout the fairgrounds.
