The Robert Rodriguez- directed action blockbuster “Machete” premiered at the Historic Orpheum Theater in downtown Los Angeles, bringing with it a bevy of Hollywood and Lowrider stars. The film stars the incomparable Danny Trejo as the lead character, so it was only fitting that the procession of the film’s stars show up in something L.A. appropriate?Lowriders. Lifestyle Car Club escorted the film’s stars, including Don Johnson, Cheech Marin, Directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, Jessica Alba, and Electra Avellan down Broadway to the Orpheum in a fleet of immaculate Lowriders, much to the delight of paparazzi and fans alike. Film star Michelle Rodriguez quipped, “This is a historical moment right here, all these Lowriders were escorted by [police] to this destination; the premiere of Machete!” Art world notables Mister Cartoon, David Choe, and Bobby Tribal were on hand as well, bringing together a full circle of supporters to the event. As these stars and the viewing public took their seats, a live Mariachi band played, appropriate in keeping in line with the Latino inspiration behind the evening.
The film is a huge breakthrough for the venerable Danny Trejo, as well as for “La Gente” in general, as lead roles have been hard to come by for Latino actors in Hollywood. Trejo, who opted to cruise in on a flame-encrusted chopper, couldn’t hide the smile on his face, as he posed for pictures and hugged fans. “It goes down on Broadway homey! I don’t even have to wear tights, and I’m a superhero!” Trejo joked from the handlebars of a gorgeous cruiser. The redemptive feel of the evening was years in the making for Trejo, who has come a long way from his troubled upbringing in Echo Park. “I’m an ex-con turned icon,” Trejo once remarked, and icon he is, although as he has primarily been a character actor all too often in his films. In this film, however, Trejo plays the lead hero for the first time, building his already impressive resume, which includes films like Michael Mann’s 1995 epic, “Heat,” and 2003’s “Once Upon a Time in Mexico.”
