In the early 80s, Frank “Pancho” Leal was cruising the ocean streets of Corpus Christi. After a few years in the lowrider scene, Pancho decided to stablish his own car club, (City Style), in 1989. The club’s base would be focused on unity and family values, which came easy, as all the founding members were his sons. Today, as son, Freddy Leal presides over the club, it has not lost site of the familia concept of decades past, with the club charter at 25 members strong.
On July 31, family and friends gathered to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of City Style C.C. With members’ cars displayed inside the American Bank Convention Center, this premier event included local dignitaries and car clubs from the Gulf coast to include Latin Kustoms, First Impressions, Rollerz Only, Latin Image, Low Impression, Los Bajitos, Los Viejitos, Swift, and Amistad. Also, special presentations were given by Fabian “Candyman” Villarreal, Brown Impressions and Taste of Latin on the club’s monumental achievement, to include special acknowledgements to the Leal brothers; Freddy, Benny Sr., Juan, Jesse, and Frank “Nano” III, for their decades of dedication to the club.
Throughout this summer night, the atmosphere seemed more of a family reunion, than that of a club event. More so, as club members, sons, and grandsons presented the club founder, Pancho, with “El Jefe”, a retro customized 1974 Chevy Caprice, for his lifelong dedication and influence to his family, club, community, and the lowrider sport. With not a dry eye in the house, this humbled “jefe” in his own right; graciously thanked his family and friends for their never ending support toward his passion for lowriding. The music of Ramiro Gonzales y Sus Nuevos Campeones ended the night on a high note?but not the celebration.
The party resumed Sunday morning as nearly 100 Texas lows, led by “El Jefe” cruised Shoreline down to Ocean Drive Blvd, where a first class Tejano style barbeque awaited the cruisers. With the cool ocean breeze and summer sun, this beachfront celebration reunited club members with some OGs of the past, as they gave homage and drank a few cold beers over the “remember whens, you member?”. The club wishes to thank all in attendance and sponsors in making the event a success and ending in style, City Style. Paz, Tejas.
