In 1975, a few Lowrider enthusiasts were hanging out at a car wash on Bakersfield’s California Avenue. The guys decided to form a car club that would have to not only unite Lowriders in the Bakersfield area, but also benefit the East Side neighborhoods and the surrounding areas. “Carnales Unidos,” which stands for “Brothers United,” was formed. The name was selected because of the simple fact that many of the members were from the different neighborhoods, but were now coming together as one under that same plaque.
Carnales Unidos Car Club celebrated their 35th anniversary in style on a beautiful Spring evening in April of 2010 at Bakersfield’s Patino Hall. The evening started with a social hour before dinner was served. Once everyone was fed, Carnales Unidos president, and the man whom many refer to as the “The Godfather of Bakersfield Lowriding,” Harvey Reyes, introduced two special guest speakers. Lowrider Magazine co-founder, Larry “El Larry” Gonzales, and Lowrider Magazine Editor Joe Ray, both spoke on the culture, sharing with the crowd their memories of Bakersfield Lowriding. Carnales Unidos presented both of them with an award of appreciation.
The club then presented an award of appreciation to many of the clubs in attendance like Latin World, Groupe, New Style, Hoodlums, Brown Persuasion, Majestics, Rollerz Only, and Classic Dreams. Car clubs from all over California came out to help Carnales Unidos celebrate their anniversary, proving their name to be fitting, even three decades after the club’s inception.
Carnales Unidos also presented past and present members with awards of appreciation for their contributions to the club. Unidos members in attendance displayed a representation from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, as well as current members from each chapter.
With the award ceremony out of the way, the club gave out raffle prizes, and after that, it was time to dance! The DJ turned up the music and the club and their guests danced into the wee hours. Congratulations to Carnales Unidos on 35 years in Lowriding! You are an asset to Lowriding, and to the communities of Bakersfield, California.
