Mesa Contemporary Arts, the City of Mesa’s contemporary art museum, at Mesa Arts Center along with our partners and sponsors, Budweiser, Motorsport Showcase LLC, Lowrider Magazine, Juxtapoz Magazine and Power and Edge Radio are proud to present, Low and Slow: The “Art” of the Lowrider exhibition and related events. This special gallery exhibition will feature the works of Lowrider Artists Mister Cartoon, OG Able, Bugs (Efrin) Gonzales, Danny D., Mike Pikel and contemporary painters MAC, Sandow Birk, Charles “Chaz” Bojorquez, Ben Beshaw and Vincent Valdez all creating artworks on car hoods. The exhibition also includes Estevan Oriol’s photographs and Mister Cartoon’s customized 1979 Monte Carlo from Lifestyle Car Club.

In conjunction with the exhibition, you, your family and your Car Club are invited to participate in a Lowrider Car show on the Mesa Arts Center campus Friday night, September 12th, 6 – 10 pm (Friday night is also the opening reception of the Low and Slow exhibition as well as “Friday Night Out in Mesa” where many of the Main Street Merchants extend their hours to 10 pm) and Saturday, September 13th, 10 am to 4 pm. This very unique event will feature for the first time beautiful automotive works of Lowrider art through-out the new Mesa Art Center displaying Lowriders and the lifestyle they represent.

In this setting, Lowrider cars, bikes, and trucks will be prominently displayed as art on wheels and acknowledged for the artistry blending culture, style, and uniqueness in creating your masterpiece. Both Friday night and Saturday will feature live entertainment, with a variety of food and drinks and specialty vendors. This fiesta style atmosphere will be family friendly and you are invited into Mesa Contemporary Arts to see the works of our Lowrider Artists from through-out Atzlan.

Coinciding with the opening of Low and Slow: The “Art” of the Lowrider, Mesa Contemporary Arts will premier Beneath the Skin: Artwork Inspired by Tattoos in the South Gallery, Arizona Wheels and Ink in the North Gallery and The Parlour in the Project Room. And finally, on Thursday, September 11 at 7:30 pm in the Piper Theater, Mesa Arts Center presents A Conversation with Mister Cartoon, Estevan Oriol and Jack Rudy where each artist will discuss their distinctive styles and provocative subject matter, providing a glimpse into the lowrider and tattoo culture.
